5 Ways to Keep Your Immunity Strong
by Natalie Monson
My family’s health is one of my top priorities. Every day I try to make choices that will ultimately lead to our family living a healthy lifestyle, feeling our best and staying healthy!
Our health is one of the most valuable things you have and it's not always easy to stay healthy. Our immune system works hard every single day to protect us against harmful pathogens that make us sick, as well as different diseases.
Living a healthy lifestyle is the best way to support a strong immune system. Every part of your body functions better when it is fueled with the right nutrients, enough sleep and minimal stress. While this sounds ideal, here are 5 practical ways you can support your immunity.
Get enough nutrition
Vitamins and minerals are essential components of our diet that have long been known to influence the immune system. Eating a balanced quality diet, can prevent deficiencies of these vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. However, there are lots of situations when we aren’t always eating a variety of nutritious foods, or times when we have increased nutrient needs. In these cases a supplement may help to fill nutritional gaps.
I’m really careful about which supplements our family takes not only for safety reasons, but also because of efficacy! We have taken SmartyPants supplements for years and I have been really happy to include their new line of healthy immunity in our routine. Both their adult Healthy‡ Immunity* Daytime and Healthy‡ Kids Immunity* include vitamins C, D3, B12, zinc to work together for your immune system with a delicious elderberry flavor.*
There are so many benefits to exercise - even just 30 minutes a day! When you get your body moving, it can help boost your mood, help you sleep better, help prevent chronic illness, slow the release of stress hormones, and even boost your energy level. Find something you love and create a routine to include it everyday for a daily immunity boost.
Get enough sleep
Setting a good bedtime routine for not only kids, but for yourself can really help you get enough sleep. Creating rituals where you do the same things every night before bed help prepare your body to go to sleep. Sometimes as adults, even when you do all those things, there are nights when it is difficult to fall asleep. SmartyPants Healthy‡ Immunity* Nighttime for adults is made with non-habit forming melatonin so you can fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.* It has become a great part of our bedtime ritual.
Stress comes for different reasons for everyone. But there are some daily practices that have been shown to help manage stress across the board.
- Exercise 30 minutes a day
- 15 minutes of meditation and deep breathing
- Enjoyable hobby - even for just 20 minutes a day
- Talk about your problems
- Eliminate triggers
Promote gut health
Our gastrointestinal tract is home to trillions of microbes, which is called the gut microbiome. Right now there is a lot of intense and active research going on and there are significant findings that the microbiome plays a key role in immune function.
Two parts of our diet that are uniquely able to affect the microbiome are probiotics and prebiotics. Probiotics are live microorganisms that have been shown to be beneficial to health. Prebiotics are non-digestible food components that microbes break down and use as energy. The study of the gut microbiome is an exciting and emerging area of research, and we have a lot to learn about how these microbes affect our health.
Probiotics and prebiotics are both found in different types of foods. Currently there is not a recommendation of how much of these foods to eat in order to get enough probiotics and prebiotics
SmartyPants Healthy‡ Immunity* Daytime, Nighttime and Healthy‡ Kids Immunity* include both prebiotic Beta-Glucan (M-Gard®) to support your immune system and probiotic Bacillus subtilis (DE111®) to support gut health.* I feel good knowing that even if my kids aren’t eating all of the foods that I would like them to, they can get these in their daily supplement.
My family is definitely not perfect in these 5 areas, but we try to make small improvements everyday to feel our best!
