Not quite an adult, definitely not a kiddo, teens are in a category all to themselves. And with that, comes countless changes. Which is why SmartyPants created a supplement just for teens. So they can feel and act their best…even when you embarrass them.
Pizza. Puberty. Smartphones. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. In addition to all the mental and emotional changes involved, “growing up” involves some major physical changes, too. These changes are very different from those a child or adult goes through and can have a direct impact on a teen’s nutritional needs.
Teens are at particular risk of dietary shortfalls, since they often skip the most important meal of the day and chow down on not-so-healthy foods. (French fries as a vegetable? Now that’s pushing it.) According to the 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the average daily intake of dark green vegetables, whole grains, and seafood for adolescents ages 9–18 fell well below the recommended dietary allowances. On average, teens between the ages of 11–17 do not meet the dietary recommendations for fruits, vegetables, and calcium-rich foods and are often low in iron.† That combined with too little sleep, too much stress, and way too much screen time doesn’t help.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Eating a wide variety of foods and eating more whole, unprocessed foods is the best way to incorporate all the nutrients you need into your and your teen’s diet. That being said, we don’t expect a 16-year-old to crave kale and green juice (not yet, anyway). That’s why our Teen Girl and Teen Guy supplements can be an awesome nutritional safety net.
Plus, getting your teen to eat our yummy SmartyPants supplements is A LOT easier than asking them to give up pizza. Now, if you can just get them to give up the backtalking…
HOW WE’RE DIFFERENT
SmartyPants Teen Girl and Teen Guy Complete supplements are not your average vitamins— each formula is a powerhouse blend of essential nutrients in forms that are the best for your teen’s body. All of our ingredients are carefully-selected to ensure that we’re always delivering the highest-quality forms available. We use premium ingredients that your teen’s body prefers and can easily use. When formulating our supplements, we also take current dietary patterns into consideration to ensure that our formulas complement the the typical Western diet. This way your teen gets more of the good nutrients you what and less of what you don’t—all in one easy to take and super yummy gummy. Plus, our supplements are free of any synthetic colors, artificial flavors, sweeteners and fake additives. Now here’s a look at our superstar ingredients for teens and why we include them.
SET YOUR SIGHTS ON LUTEIN & ZEAXANTHIN
Teens and technology go hand and hand, literally. In fact, it often feels like the only time your teen isn’t texting or ‘gramming is when they’re in the shower. And that’s no exaggeration. A study by Common Sense Media found that “American teenagers average about nine hours (8:56) of entertainment media use, excluding time spent at school or for homework.” Since we know that teens won’t give up streaming, social media, or video games anytime soon, we include lutein and zeaxanthin to help protect the eye from damaging blue light (the most damaging spectrum of visible light). Lutein and zeaxanthin may help reduce eye fatigue that comes with prolonged exposure to blue light emitted by devises like smartphone, tablets, and laptops.
GIVE ME A B(12) FOR ENERGY!
Found exclusively in animal products, B12 is the only vitamin we can’t get from plants or sunlight. If your teen is a vegan or a vegetarian (or just not a fan of liver, clams, or sardines) they may need to supplement. B12 as methylcobalamin is the form that is found in nature and most easily used by the body—it’s also the form we use in SmartyPants. B12 supports energy production.* Now, maybe they’ll have enough energy to clean their room. (Who are we kidding?!)
MORE D3, PLEASE
Vitamin D3 isn’t technically a vitamin, but a hormone that’s made in the skin after being exposed to UVB light. The best way to get vitamin D3 is from the sun. However, since teens are spending up to nine hours per day looking at a screen, it’s hard to come by. And although it’s possible to obtain vitamin D3 from food, most of these foods aren’t part of the average teen diet (think salmon, fortified milk, sardines). We include Vitamin D3 because it enables bones and teeth to grow properly by helping the body absorb calcium and phosphorous.*
Omega-3 fatty acids like DHA and EPA are essential for proper brain development and for overall health and growth.* The best sources are wild-caught fatty fish and some sea algae. Of course, most teens prefer fries over fish, which is why we include it.
HEY, GIRL/OH BOY
Biotin is the bff of beauty and health lovers. Because few foods are particularly rich in biotin, we include it in our Teen Girl Complete to help maintain, healthy hair, skin and nails.* And for the fellas, our Teen Guy Complete comes with zinc for immune support and healthy metabolism.*
LATER, TEEN ANGST
Teens are a special breed who deserve special supplements. By providing them with the nutrients their bodies want, their future is bright—and delicious.
