We’ve Helped Reach Over 13 Million Children

by Grace McCalmon

As of July 2020 SmartyPants has officially made 13,073,813 matching nutrient grants to children in need through our partnership with Vitamin Angels.

We know how important vitamins are (that’s why we do what we do), but more often than not, those who need vitamins the most don’t have access to them. This is why, before we sold our first bottle of SmartyPants, we teamed up with Vitamin Angels, a non-profit that helps at-risk populations – specifically pregnant women, new mothers, and children under five – gain access to lifesaving and life changing vitamins and minerals.

For every bottle of SmartyPants you buy, we make a matching nutrient grant to Vitamin Angels so they can get essential nutrients to mothers and children around the world.

The next time someone says vitamins are a waste of time and money you can say two words: Copenhagen Consensus. This think tank is dedicated to figuring out the most cost-effective way to advance global welfare. According to the 2008 Consensus, supplementing undernourished populations with vitamins, specifically vitamin A and zinc, was the number one way to do the most good for the most people, at the lowest cost.   Both the 2012 Consensus and the latest, post-2015 Consensus continued to prioritize fighting malnutrition as one of the most effective targets in terms of social value-for-money.

According to the World Health Organization, 45% of all childhood deaths are attributable to undernutrition, or lack of sufficient nutrients in the body. For young children during their key developmental years, poor nutrition can lead not only to health problems like blindness and impaired physical and cognitive development, but also to immediate life-threatening conditions. Making vitamins available to children in need is the most immediate and cost-effective way to create a healthier world.

“We are committed to our partnership with Vitamin Angels because we know what a huge impact health has, its hard to be a good student, a good caregiver or a good anything without your health and we know that supplements for people who don’t have consistent access to a varied diet can be a life changing and even lifesaving intervention” said Courtney Nichols Gould, CoFounder and CoCEO of SmartyPants Vitamins. But without people like you and all our other, loyal SmartyPants customers, none of this would be possible.

So the next time you pick up a bottle of SmartyPants you can feel really good. Not just because you’re getting some extra nutrients of your own, but because you’re helping make someone else’s life a whole lot healthier too.
