Each serving of our Adult and Kids Mineral Formulas contains 150 mg of calcium as premium calcium citrate. The Recommended Dietary Allowances are: 700 mg/day for kids 1-3 years old, 1,000 mg/day for kids 4-8 years old, 1,300 mg/day for kids 9-18 years old, and 1,000 mg/day for adults 19-70 years old. So, you might be wondering – isn’t the amount you include low? I thought I needed a lot of calcium for strong, healthy bones and teeth?*

Well, we’re happy you’re asking the right questions! You’re absolutely correct that calcium is critical mineral our bodies use to strengthen our bones and teeth. Calcium is found in many commonly eaten drinks and foods such as milk, broccoli, yogurt, and spinach. Many foods in the United States are also fortified with calcium, such as orange juice, breakfast cereals, non-dairy milks, and instant oat meals. Despite that, many Americans still don’t consume an adequate amount of calcium per day through diet alone, and the challenge is especially difficult for those who don’t consume dairy regularly or at all.*

At SmartyPants, we always recommend you get nutrients from food first. We formulate our products to complement the average American diet, not replace it. We focus on filling dietary gaps. When it comes to calcium, it’s important to consider both the form of calcium and complementary vitamins and minerals which help the body regulate and absorb calcium.

Calcium citrate is one of the most easily absorbed form of calcium available and is the premium form we include in our chews. Calcium carbonate, the most prevalent form on the market, requires a large amount of stomach acid to be absorbed, which can be a problem for certain groups of people.

Unbeknownst to many, vitamin D and magnesium play and important role in bone and teeth health as well. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium. Magnesium helps convert vitamin D into its active form and a balanced ratio of magnesium to calcium is also key to proper calcium metabolism. In adults, on-going research shows that vitamin K2 helps activate proteins involved in bone strengthening. We include vitamin D and magnesium in both our Kids and Adult Mineral Complete and vitamin K2 in our Adult Mineral Complete.*

Combining adequate levels of calcium and complementary nutrients with regular, weight-bearing exercise will put you well on your way to supporting strong, healthy bones for life. If you’re concerned about your calcium levels, we always recommend you consult your healthcare provider to figure out the right amount of calcium supplementation for you.
